Carry forward some of our ‘experiences’ into 2021….
The constant doom and gloom of 2020 was over-whelming, a year most of us are happy to put behind us. However the year also provided ‘experiences’ that cannot be overlooked…..
- Quarantine forced us to slow down. It created space for a fresh perspective – it helped us hold up the mirror and ask tough questions like ’Is what is taking my time and attention really important right now?’ Quarantine provided the head space to re-boot.
- Our ability to adjust and adapt is remarkable. We have demonstrated in spades that we can take ourselves out of our comfort zone and experiment with new ways of working. Overnight we have become more familiar with various digital tools – it stretched us, made us feel uncomfortable and the learning was phenomenal.
- The new way of working from home is less business like and I’m not talking about wearing PJs for 9am calls. With glimpses into people’s homes, surprise visits of ‘hungry’ children or noisy pets, it has brushed away that veneer of formality and with us ‘all being in it together’ provided opportunities to create deeper emotional connections with the people we work with every day.
- Trust has always been an important ingredient in the workplace and during 2020 it became sacrosanct. Care and empathy from leaders became so much more important than focusing on the work itself. ‘Being’ more human and experimenting with different ways to keep teams connected became the more welcome way for many leaders.
- Self care is too often at the bottom of the priority list. The line between work and home life has become so much more blurred making ‘down-time’ away from the stressors essential to maintain our wellbeing and our energy levels. Perhaps self care will be at the top of all our priority lists in 2021.
2020 was tough, way beyond anything we could have imagined! However, we remain hopeful and perhaps wiser and better equipped for the future ahead…..
